    Giant Carp

Good read on a giantic carp. Maybe we should have koi in a lake, not a pond.

That's probably a more factual piece of reporting than most of the articles that appeared in our papers. In one article they actually had a picture of a Mirror Carp instead of a Common.

Whilst following up on the story with some surfing I uncovered a fair amount of contraversy about this carp from before its demise.

It appears that there were two 'prize' carp in the UK angling fraternity. This one and a Mirror Carp called "Two-tone" and each had their fan club.

Part of the contraversy about Benson was that it couldn't/shouldn't hold the "British record" as it came from Belgium as a 30lb specimen several years earlier.

It became very apparent that British Carp Anglers are as fanatical as we Koi Keepers.

The fish 'might' have died from Fatty liver disease? might have??? Good lord, look at the beast! She obviously couldn't pass up on that second plate of pasta! 25 is plenty old for a full figured carp such as that.

I been around some of them Limey carp fishermen. They are waaaay beyond koi people and even bass fishermen on the way to crazy.

They got the gear, laptop computer, radio control boat that dumps chum, underwater tv camera on the boat and another on the end of a pole that can be cast about, sensitivity devices that tell when a bite is coming, cooler full of wine, and all of it within easy reach of the fishing chair.

They spend big bucks in the pursuit of carp and even sometimes slow to pick up Texans figured that one out. In Austin there is now a slot limit on carp and mandatory catch and release for fish out of the slot. They are actually PROTECTING a carp fishery. I don't believe there is another such program anywhere in the US. Town Lake in Austin is one of the UK's carp fisherman's dream fishing destinations.

The bass fishermen protested greatly but eventually lost out to local Austin businesses that like folks coming over from the UK to carp fish.

Now, as long as the bass fishermen remain clueless about such things as KHV.......

The nightmare scenario is that somebody looses a KHV infected koi into the waterway and destroys a multi-million dollar fishery.
